Dighapatia Rajbari – Natore

Uttara Gonobhaban, Dighapatia rajbari, natore

Dighapatia Rajbari is located only 1-2 kilometer apart from the main town of Natore. It is one of the finest examples of Jamidar bari from Bangladesh. The whole Rajbari premise is around 43 acres. It was build in 1734 by Raja Doyaram who was a Dewan of Rani Bhabani. But during the cataclysm of earthquake of 1897 it was almost wrecked. After that it was rebuilt by Pramada Nath Roy. President of Bangladesh uses to stay here during their visit to the northern part of the country. That’s why it is also known as Uttara Gonobhobon (or Uttara Ganabhaban).

This Dighapatia Rajbari is surrounded by water from every sides to make it secure. The entrance to the premise is through the front door which is located at the Eastern side. The main building of the Rajbari is having a style of European (or colonial). It has a nice backyard garden which is decorated with several Greek or Roman style statues. Inside the main building it has a very big living room and dinning hall.

An entrance to the palace building.

This was a guarded palace and we were not allowed to enter the premise. It needed a permission to enter inside. Lot of visitors were standing outside and were clueless similar to us. Visitors were paying the guards to have an access to the premise. But since 2018 the government turned this place into a museum. Hopefully now they can enter in a proper way.

How to Go:

Dighapatia Rajbari (or Uttara Ganabhaban) is another landmark from the Natore district. GPS coordinate for the location is (24°26’23.8″N, 89°00’38.8″E). If you ask anyone they would give you a direction to go there. You can hire any tri-wheeler or a battery driven vehicle to reach there (instead of using public buses).

Opening and Closing time:

Uttara Ganabhaban remains closed during Sunday (similar to most of the museums of Bangladesh). It remains open from 10am to 5:00pm during winter. Summer time might be till 6:00pm, not sure. It requires 20 Taka per person to enter. For the foreign tourists it might take more, probably 400 Taka.

Where to Stay:

There are few normal quality hotels available in Natore town. Hotel VIP, Hotel RP, etc are few I remembered during my visit. I possibly stayed in Hotel RP.
