Portcoon Jetty – Northern Ireland

Portcoon Jetty

Portcoon jetty is a less crowed place located just at the left side after entering through the gate of Giant causeway. In another way it would be on the way to Dunluce castle if you do a coastal walk. This place is about 20-30 minutes of slow trekking from the entrance (assuming you’d take few photos). If anyone visiting Giant’s causeway who wants to visit this place then they would have to spare an extra hour or more.

As most of the tourists use to come by the day tour buses that’s why it becomes impossible for them to explore the area. Hopefully this is the main reason for this place to be crowd free. The walking path towards the Portcoon jetty is very easy. The route goes over the edge of the cliffs. And other lands are private property (so no option for shortcuts). That’s why the walking path meanders like a snake. From the top the view towards the Giant’s causeway looks very beautiful.

There is a small (probably 20 feet long) wall in the water at the jetty. May be people used to reach this place using a boat during the high tide (looks like during low tide the water level is really poor for even a small boat). The jetty area is at the middle of two small cliffs. This is mainly a narrow place. The main attraction could have been the Portcoon cave which is just right side of the jetty area (which is over the rock and not seen from jetty area). That cave is accessible during the low tide and also one needs to go around a rock boulder. I didn’t have that much courage to cross the boulder as they were slippery and the water level was rising. Otherwise it would have been a nice experience to explore the cave.

A lovely view towards the Causeway from the trek.

It doesn’t take too much time to explore the area as the Portcoon jetty is a very small place. The area is surrounded by plenty of rocks which were slippery. It needs a careful movement and attention to avoid any injuries. We went there after visiting the Millenium park. And from there we’ve gone to the famous Gian’t causeway.
