Pirojpur: DC Park & River Baleswar

Friday, 02 January 2015

After visiting the Rayerkathi Jomidar Bari, our final destination was the Khulna town and find some rooms. But this DC park was on our way. It was at Pirojpur Sadar Upazela (পিরোজপুর সদর উপজেলা) and situated exactly beside the River Baleswar (বলেশ্বর নদী). We have turned our car towards this direction and had a pause here for a while. It is slightly far from the main town, somewhere inside a village-like environment.

River Baleswar (বলেশ্বর নদী) beside the park.

It required us to buy a ticket (probably 10 Taka per person) before entering. There were several walking footpaths available inside. We have had a walk through those paths for a while. There were a lot of flowers (mostly rose) around the paths. We have climbed a tower that was at the one side of the park. It was high enough to allow us to see 360 degree around us (because there weren’t any high raised buildings).

That tower helped us to enjoye the beauty of the Baleswar river (বলেশ্বর নদী) completely. It allowed us to view the river for a long distance. Even we could able to see the bridge over the river Baleswar (বলেশ্বর) that connects the Bagerhat (বাগেরহাট) and Pirojpur (পিরোজপুর). It was probably near the high tide and that’s why the river was full with water.

A long bench, we had a sitting here for a while.

There were a lot of benches like things (or should I say a long bench as a whole?) at the river side. We have had a sitting on there for a while. It was under a series of coconut trees. Probably the coconut trees were the most predominant tree from this park. From there we have seen a picnic party were doing a lot of fun with the lottery announcement. I have never won such lottery during my picnics.

About the Park (ডিসি পার্ক):

Bangladesh itself is a beautiful country. There are lot of things to do here in Bangladesh. But for our local people, they are used to with this boring beauty. So they need something different to cheer up. Hence the idea of this park. It is bounded by walls, well secured, needs to put money before entering. Had a lot of artificial things inside which our people are not habituated by seeing. As a result these sort of things really attract them.

But don’t think that I am discouraging you from visiting this. It is a very lovely place. The park is organized nicely (though the work is still in progress for further improvement), the environment inside is nice. The most beautiful part from the park is the high tower that allowed us to enjoy the beauty from around. Another beauty is the river itself. You can enjoy the beauty of the river from the ground or from the tower.

About River Baleswar (বলেশ্বর নদী):

I do not know much about this river. But probably it was originated from our famous River Modhumoti (মধুমতি নদী) and falls back into the River Kocha (কচা নদী). But unfortunately the flow of the river is only available near the ending. The flow is mainly dependent upon the high tide and the low tide. If we consider there is no high or low tide, then it is more or less a dead river. Because there is almost nothing remaining at the upper portion of the river.

Baleswar bridge (বলেশ্বর ব্রীজ) over the river is also visible from the tower.

How to Go:

Pirojpur DC Park (পিরোজপুর ডিসি পার্ক) is located slightly outside from the Pirojpur (পিরোজপুর) main town. That’s why first you have to come to the Pirojpur district first. From Dhaka there are several ferries (locally known as launch) start for Pirojpur (পিরোজপুর) every night. You can ride any of those. Alternately you can come here using Bus as well. It will be probably through Bagerhat (I am not sure). From the district town, you can take auto rickshaw to come near the place. Just ask local people about the place. For your assistance, the GPS coordinate is (22°33’27.92″N, 89°57’27.46″E).

Where to Stay:

Well, this district doesn’t have too much facilitated hotel (if you like luxury). That case you have to stay at the nearby towns like Bagerhat (বাগেরহাট) or Khulna (খুলনা). But if you are not that much picky about the hotels, then feel free to stay any cheap hotels from the town. It won’t be a bad idea, trust me.

It was the day-1 of our four days trip at Southern Bangladesh. We have traveled Barisal (বরিশাল), Jhalokathi (ঝালকাঠি), Pirojpur (পিরোজপুর), Bagerhat (বাগেরহাট), and Khulna (খুলনা) on those days.
