Alexander Castle from Mymensingh

Alexander castle is an old edifice that was mostly built using iron and wood. It was built during 1879 by the Moharaj Surjo Kanta Acharya Chodhury. As most of the portions were built using Iron, local people used to call this as Lohar Kuthi (means house of iron). Though the building is nothing compare to the buildings from our modern time. But the antique value is priceless. That’s why lot of tourists use to come here everyday.

This Alexander castle is a nice small archaic building having two Greek statues at the either side of the front gate. Though the arms of those statues are currently broken, but still those look classic. The whole building is placed over a high plinth, probably to avoid the flood from the nearby mighty Brahmaputra river.

This house had been using as a rest house for the guests of that time. Famous people like our great poet Rabindranath Tagore, Lord Curzon, and many more delegates enjoyed their staying there during their visit.

How to go:

Alexander castle is located at the main town of Mymensingh district. This place is also near to the great river Brahmaputra. Any visitor to this town can easily explore this area by having a walk or using a rickshaw. It is currently being used as a library of the Teacher’s Training College. GPS coordinate of the house is (24°45’44.13″N, 90°24’10.96″E). FYI, it is also very near to the Town Hall Mor of the town.

As this house is located a mid of an open area, lot of local kids were playing near the house. Also it had a playground beside where kids were playing cricket (a local popular sport). The grounds were covered with lot of litters. Not sure who did that, but surely someone needed to clean it up.
