Bangladesh has very few lakes surrounded by small hills. This Madhabpur lake is one of those fews. This is located at Komolganj of Sreemangal in Bangladesh. This lake is inside the Madhabpur tea state garden. This lake is a nice location for day trip to explore the tea gardens and lake. Any enthusiastic person can have a trek around the lake area (but would take plenty of times as it is very lengthy). Being its unique nature (lake, tea gardens, hills) lot of tourists use to visit Madhabpur lake during weekend.
Madhabpur lake is between the small hills, and most of the hills are planted with tea plants. This lake is very wide and branched, it’s hard to cover the whole lake with our normal camera. There is always a heavy wind from the lake that made the water of the lake looks like a river. We have walked at the footpath that was newly constructed at the west bank of the lake. Also we have gone to the top of the hills that gave us almost a panoramic view of the lake.
Madhabpur lake is full with lilies at the banks of every side. The color of the lilies is kind of blue. I have never seen such kind of lilies before. I have seen magenta and white colored waterlilies before, but this one was new for me. It’s so beautiful, and the the lily looks a bit glowing from far. It seems that some one did a photoshop work on the flower for that glowing.
I have visited the Boga lake before, and I have had a tour at Sundarban. From first sight of the lake, I found that the lake is a mixture of the Sundarban’s rivers at high tide, and the Boga lake. Cause the east coast of the lake has some trees which almost looks like the keora trees of Sundarban from far. This is my opinion, it may not match with your view point.
After visiting the lake we had a swim in Madhabpur lake, and let our body cooled. There was no restriction about swimming inside the lake. The lake is a government property, but the surrounding hills and other stuffs are control by local tea company, who have taken these as a lease. Not sure how deep the water of the lake. So do not become over adventurous.
From the lake area, there is a tomb or monument, something like that is situated 5 kilometers apart from the lake. As we were running out of time we could not make that. May be better luck for our next trip at Madhabpur.
How to Go:
Madhabpur was not a famous tourists spot when we’ve visited there in 2010. Our car driver didn’t want to go to that lake, cause he didn’t know about the place. He said that there was nothing about lake or place for picnic at that particular area. But I was pretty sure, and I forced him to take us to the Madhabpur lake. This lake is 7-10 kilometers west side from the Komolganj point. Komolganj point is just 4-5 kilometers far from the Lawachhara rain forest.
But these days it is a very popular tourist spot. Lot of local and foreign tourist use to explore the lake area. You can hire a private vehicle from Sreemangal and come here. If you find it difficult to locate the lake ask the local people. They are very helpful about it. GPS coordinate of the Madhabpur lake is (24°16’54.2″N, 91°49’15.1″E).
