Mymensingh(ময়মনসিংহ) is one of the biggest district from our country. But compare to it's size, the district never had that much focus from the tourism's point of view. It has several places to visit and Muktagachha Jomidar Bari(মুক্তাগাছা জমিদার বাড়ী) is one of those. This old edifice is located at the heart of the Muktagachha(মুক্তাগাছা) town.

Previous name of Muktagachha(মুক্তাগাছা) was Binodbari(বিনোদবাড়ী). It is believed/fact that the Jomidars(জমিদার) actually came from the Natore(নাটোর) or Bogra(বগুড়া) of our North Bengal. When the first ruler arrived here, a local inhabitant named Muktaram Kormokar(মুক্তারাম কর্মকার) welcomed them with a large lamp stand that was made from brass. (In that portion of our country, people call a lamp stand as Gachha(গাছা)). This gratitude pleased the Jamidar(জমিদার) and they have renamed the area as Mukta Gachha(মুক্তা গাছা) using that inhabitant's name and the lamp stand's local name.

According to the history, most of the rulers from the family have adopted babies in different era and those adopted child ruled the area later. For example Gourikanta(গৌরীকান্ত) was adopted by Roghunondon(রঘুনন্দন). Son of Gourikanta(গৌরীকান্ত) was Shashikanta(শশীকান্ত) and his wife adopted Surjokanta(সূর্য্যকান্ত) as she was childless. Later this Surjokanto(সূর্য্যকান্ত) became the prominent Jomidar(জমিদার) from Mymensingh(ময়মনসিংহ). People use to call him as Moharaja(মহারাজা).

Anyway, this old house from muktagachha(মুক্তাগাছা) covers a vast area, though most of the structures are in very poor condition. Few things were stolen by the locals, and others are just dilapidated for not taking any care. Inside the premise I have seen a two stored iron & steel made house(though floors are all gone, only structure is standing there). Also there was a swivel meeting table was built inside the Jomidar bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) that was by Bhupendra Kishore(ভূপেন্দ্র কিশোর).

Most of the rulers from this family were cruel and hostile to the peasants. They have lot of allegations against them including raping, torturing, etc. It was considered as a crime whenever a peasant from that area use to cross the Jomidar bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) using any shoe or umbrella. Guards use to beat them whenever someone committed such crime.

When we have arrived to that Jomibar bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) premise, it was almost at the end of the day. We only had 40/45 minutes to explore the area. It would be great if we could have passed more time there. After the dusk, we had a break at the ghat of the pond in front of the palace. It was another long day and we were tired.

How to Go:

You can come to Mymensingh(ময়মনসিংহ) using either a train(three hours) or using a Bus(4-5 hours). Several quality bus services are available from Mohakhali(মহাখালী) Bus Stoppage. You can take Ena Poribohon(এনা পরিবহন), Shoukhin(সৌখিন), etc.

From the town hall Mor(মোড়) of the city, you can take either CNG driven auto rickshaw, or any local bus for Muktagachha(মুক্তাগাছা). It was 25 Taka per person and required around half an hour to reach at Muktagachha(মুক্তাগাছা). From there using a Rickshaw you can reach near to the Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী).

GPS of the Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) is (24°46'1.01"N, 90°15'18.21"E).

What to Do:

Muktagachh(মুক্তাগাছা) a is famous for the best Monda(মন্ডা) from Bangladesh. You can by the Monda after visiting the Jomidar Bari. The sweet shop is near to that place. Currently the shop is owned by Gopal Pal(গোপাল পাল), the 5th generation of the Pal(পাল) family.

Main entrance to the palace.

Possibly it was two stored and thick woods use to be on that to make it a floor. Now those woods are gone.

This was a two stored house made from iron and steel. Now the floors are all gone, only the stands and walls are available. Jomidar himself use to live here with his wife.

This building is in very risky condition. Anytime the roof can collapse.

A temple at the front gate of the palace.
